THE EXPERIMENT

Our June 2024* experiment began with a simple question: 
How can AI-technology enhance visual storytelling for maker brands seeking creative production solutions?

We were fortunate to collaborate with the innovative Dutch-Finnish craft beer brewery The Flying Dutchman Brewing Company, who generously gave us creative freedom to explore this frontier. Through this process, we developed a hybrid approach blending AI-generated visual assets with brand elements and product photography. 

The results demonstrate how emerging technologies, when applied purposefully alongside traditional production techniques, can enhance visual brand storytelling—creating effective, business-driven content that helps brands connect with their audience while expanding the tools available for strategic brand communication.


I vårt juni 2024 eksperiment med det mikrobryggeriet The Flying Dutchman Brewing Company undersøkte vi om mindre merkevarer kunne skape overbevisende visuelt innhold med AI-verktøy (kunstig intelligens) tross begrensede budsjetter. Vi testet en hybridløsning som kombinerte AI-generert materiale med profesjonell kreativ styring. Gjennom dokumentasjon av hele prosessen avdekket vi både spennende muligheter og nåværende begrensninger, som kan åpne nye veier for visuell merkevarefortelling i framtiden.

The Flying Dutchman Brewing Company is an award-winning nomad craft brewery led by Founder Ronald de Waal, a wandering brewmaster with over 25 years of experience. As a pioneer of the craft beer movement across Finland, the Netherlands, and Belgium, Ronald embodies the spirit of creative exploration and freedom that made this collaboration an ideal testing ground for exploring new production approaches.

II. Image Generation With Midjourney

Generate with prompts.

The quick, iterative generative process allowed us to explore multiple concepts, adjusting prompts until potential and compelling styles emerged that captured the brand's spirit.

Explore visual elements.

Within the selected style direction, we explored visual elements and fine-tuned the style through different variations that better resonated with the brand's visuals and story.

...but also expect the (un)expected results.

Sometimes the AI gave us quirky and unusual interpretations - these limitations highlighted the current boundaries of the technology and influenced our production decisions. 

Sometimes we had to abandon certain elements because the results weren't acceptable, with additional challenges appearing when transitioning from still images to motion with Runway.

We used Runway's Gen-2 and Gen-3 video generation to bring our still images to life through motion, creating usable footage for the final production.

Creating these floral and nature-inspired visuals using AI allowed us to achieve results that reflect the brand's spirit at a reasonable cost, while maintaining flexibility for changes throughout the production — but limited to the technology's current capabilities. Though the process still demands time commitment, it offers creative possibilities that would otherwise be out of reach for many brands.
